Statoil is the leading player on the Norwegian continental shelf. It has undertaken a gradual expansion of its international upstream operations in recent yea's, and is currently active in 23 countries. The Statoil group is one of the world's largest net sellers of crude oil, and a substantial supplier of natural gas to Europe. Statoil ranks as the largest retailer of petrol and other oil products in Scandinavia. Net operating revenue for the Statoil group in 1998 totaled NOK 107 billion. The group has just over 18 000 employees.
Statoil has a 50 per cent interest in the Borealis petrochemicals group and owns 80 per cent of the Navion shipping company. Statoil is responsible for managing the state's direct financial interest (SDFl) in partnerships engaged in exploration for as well as development, production and transport of oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf.
