Borders
Two state borders (Ukraine and Rumania, Ukraine and Moldova) pass througth
that region.
In the south Odessa region borders upon Black Sea. The length of the sea and
firth coasts is 300 km.
Odessa region is situated at the intersection of the important international
water ways:
Dunay water way is the shortest wayout from Europe to Black Sea,
next - Transcaucasia, Middle Asia, to the Near East; river Dnestr connects
the region with Moldova, Dnepr - with Central Ukraine and Belorussia,
after finishing Dneprovsko-Buzhskogo and Dneprovsko-Nemanskogo channels
- with Poland and Baltic region. Volgo-Donsk system connects
Azov-Black Sea basin with Russia (up to Saint-Petersburg and Murmansk),
, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, it gives the exits to
Caspian Sea, Baltic Sea and White Sea.
Industry
Food industry, chemical and oilchemical industry, engineering.
Machine-tool branch is especially developed. It is represented by
factories of metal cutting machine tools production, blacksmith and press
equipment.
Agriculture
Total corn crop in 1999 was about 2162,8 thousand tons,
beetroot - 277,0 th. t, sunflower seeds - 294,0 th. t,
potatoes - 205,9 th. t. It was also produced 133,7 th. t. of meat,
546,3 th. t. of milk and 656,6 mln. eggs. At the beginning of 1999
there were 4571 farms in the region.
Nature
The main advantage of that region - is its subsoil resources, which are
represented
by black earth with great natural fertility.
Together with mild steppe climate they form high agriculture potential in
that region.
The climate of that region is arid especially in the south part of the region.
That's why almost 10% of cultivated lands are irrigated.
