The Kostroma Region ranks as second in Central Russia after the Tver Region by
its territory: 60,1 thousand sq.km. There are 808,8 thousand people living in the
region (the average population density is 13 persons per 1 sq.km.).
Kostroma city is the administrative center of the Kostroma Region. It is
situated in the south-west part of the Kostroma Region, at the confluence of the Volga
and Kostroma Rivers (330 km north-east of Moscow).
Kostroma is a city where the history and contemporaneity neighbor
and accompany each other. In XVII - XVIII centuries in Kostroma, on the base of
the local natural resources textile and tannery, forging and silver forging,
soapmaking and icon painting were well developed.
Despite the fact that the tourist industry appears to be fully formed and

The Kostroma Region spreads from north to the south - 260 km, and from

Regions, in the west with the Yaroslavl Region, in the east with the Kirov Region.
The railway density is 24,1 km./1000 sq.km., roads 92,5 km./1000 sq.km.
Highways connecting north-west of the Russian Federation go through the Kostroma
Region.
There is a river port in Kostroma (the Volga River). Phone communication is operating with all
the districts of the region, including automated lines.
The number of resident population is 786 thousand people. Among them: urban - 517 thousand
people, rural - 269 thousand people. Population density - 13,2 people/sq.km.
Working-age population is 444 thousand people (56.4 %), under-working age - 155 thousand
people (19.7 %), over-working age - 187 thousand people (23.9 %).
As part of the Kostroma Region there are: regional center - Kostroma city (founded
in 1152), 5 towns of regional subordination, 6 towns of district subordination, 24 districts,
7 settlements of urban type, 3594 settlements united by 274 village and settlement
administrations.
The region is located in the subzone of the south taiga, the distinguishing feature of
which is the predominance of spruce forests.
Forest-land percentage is 74,3 %. This determines the development
of timber and woodworking industry. There are enterprises of machinebuilding,
electric power, textile and other industrial branches.
The development of agriculture is moving towards animal breeding products. The base for it serves
the unique Kostroma Cow Breed. The traditional growing and processing of flax is
coming to life.
Owing to the abundant natural resources, economic revival, highly developed
infrastructure and skilled professionals, the Kostroma Region is very
prospective for investment development.
The Kostroma Region is located in the center of the European part of Russia.
