Izhevsk is situated in the eastern part of East European Plain, in the European part of Russia, between Volga and Ural rivers,
in the interfluve of Kama and Vyatka rivers, in 1129 km. from Moscow.

All governmental offices of the Udmurtian Republic are concentrated in Izhevsk. The city ranks among the largest centers
of the Russian industry. The population of Izhevsk is 652,5 thousand people. The total area of Izhevsk city is 31560 ha,
including: forests - 9045 ha, arable land - 6276 ha, perennial plantings - 985 ha, shelterbelt - 735 ha, bodies of water -
2100 ha, real estate development - 7809 ha, roads - 1976 ha (statistic data on the 1st of January, 2003).
Industry.
In the course of two and a half centuries the basis of economical development of Izhevsk were energy-intensive industries
of machine tool building and metallurgy.
From the very beginning Izhevsk was destined to produce defense weapons, ensuring safety of the country.
This specialization has been maintained and developed up to now. After World War the Second, Izhevsk plants began to develop
and manufacture the Kalashnikov gun. The legendary designer of the fire weapons, General Michail Timofeevich Kalashnikov is
the honorary citizen and resident of Izhevsk city. During the last decades of the XX century electronic industry had been
actively developed in Izhevsk. At present, the Izhevsk industrial complex is presented by 50 large plants of machine building,
metallurgy, electronics, chemistry etc. Among them are "Izhmash" OJSC, "Bummash" OJSC , "Izhevsk Bearings Plant" OJSC,
federal state unitary enterprise "Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol", Izhevsk Motor Plant "Aksion-Holding" OJSC,
state enterprise "Izhevsk Mechanical Plant", "Izhneftemash" OJSC, "Izhstal" OJSC, "Izhevsk Radio Plant" OJSC,
"Izhevsk Pastics Plant" OJSC, and others. Equipment for fuel and energy complex, agroindustrial complex, production of paper,
machine tools with numerical programme control, reducing gears, bearings, cars and motor blocks, all types of fire arms,
metal and metal roll, integrated systems of space communication and electronic equipment, medical and household appliances,
plastics, military equipment is still not the full list of goods, manufactured by city's enterprises. There are companies from
70 countries among the partners of Izhevsk plants.
Over 50 companies with foreign investments from 40 countries are registered in Izhevsk, including 10 of CIS.
Thanks to the high technical development of the industrial production, Izhevsk has a large intellectual and science-research
potential.
Science and education.
There are 231 preschool establishments, 100 secondary schools, 4 professional schools. Widely known by their academical
traditions and high level of education are the Izhevsk higher educational establishments: Udmurtia State University and Izhevsk State
Technical University, Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy, Izhevsk State Medical Academy, and International East European
University.
Sports life.
Izhevsk city numbers more than 500 sports structures, including 4 stadiums, 192 sports halls, 8 ski lodges, 16 swimming
pools, 20 shooting ranges.
From the beginning of the nineties of the XX century, Izhevsk has become the host center for holding large international
and All-Russian sports events, such as the World Checkers Championship (December of 1993), International Rhythmic-Sportive
Gymnastics Tournament with participation of Australian, Japanese, German, Chinese female gymnasts (April of 1994), the
quarterfinal of the World Ice Speedway Championship with participation of the sportsmen from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria,
Kazakhstan (February of 1995), International Boxing Tournament in memory of A. Abramov (December of 1995), final of the World
Team Ice Speedway Championship with participation of teams from Sweden, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Finland,
Holland (January of 1996), International Festival of Basketball among junior teams (May of 1998), International Checkers
World Championship (August of 1998), European Biathlon Championship (February of 1993), Winter Olympicsof OAO "Gazprom" workers

Cultural and creative life of Izhevsk.
Creative Izhevsk is worthily represented by numerous cultural institutions, creative unions, teams and theatre professional
and amateur companies for city residents and visitors.
Municipal library network of Izhevsk unites more than 30 libraries. The largest in Izhevsk and the Udmurtian Republic
is the National Library of the Udmurtian Republic, founded in 1918 and serving more than 30 thousand readers.
The Izhevsk theatre art is represented by Udmurtian Legitimate Drama Theatre and Musical Theatre of the Udmurtian Republic
(its repertoire includes performances in the national language of the Republic), State Russian Legitimate Drama Theatre,
State Puppet Theatre, municipal theatre "Young Man", a great number of youth and amateur studios.
The novelties of the World and Russian movie industry are demonstrated by 9 cinemas, among them are two modern digital
cinemas "Izhstal" and "Avrora".
For over 40 years Izhevsk has been hosting the annual musical festival named after P.I. Chaikovsky. Udmurtian State Band of
Dancing and Singing "Italmas" has become a visit card of Izhevsk in Russia and abroud since a long time. Holding juzz
festivals is the latest traditional trend.
