Status: a city of regional subordination, the administrative center of the Irkutsk Region.
It is situated on the Irkutsko-Cheremkhovskaya plain, at the inflow of the Irkut
River into the Angara River (port), 66 km west of Lake Baikal, 5042
km east of Moscow.

Economy.
Irkutsk Hydropower Station, where the Irkutsk water-storage pond was built owing to dam,,
it was the first in the chain of hydro-electric power stations on the Angara River.

Monastery, White House (former residence of Sibiryakov), house-museum of Decembrists
in the manor of Volkonskie, "Angara" museum-icebreaker, monument to Alexander III on
the embankment of the Angara River, monument to the admiral Alexander Kolchak,
several archeological sites dated back to over 30 thousand years, including the first
palaeolith dwelling site found on the territory of Russia.
