It is situated at the foothills of the Altai Mountains, on the banks of the Mayma River,
near its inflow into the Katun River (hithe), 96 km south-east of
the Biysk railway station and 7.5 km of the Chuisky highway, with which the city
is connected by highway service, 3641 km east of Moscow.
Economy.
The leading industries: electrical manufacturing industry, food (meat processing,
creamery, flour-and-cereals), light, lumbering and woodworking, building materials.
Agriculture: animal breeding for meat and dairy industry, sheep
breeding, goat breeding; yak, Siberian stag, dappled deer breeding. Fruit
growing and bee keeping is developed.
