It is situated on the south margin of Central Russian Upland,
on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River,
695 km south of Moscow.
Economy.
For the present, one of the priority areas in the economy of Belgorod is the chalk mining
and export. The chalk, extracted on the territory of the Belgorod region
has no analogues all over the world.
Besides, there is an iron ore mining on the territory of the Belgorod Region, the large deposits
of which are spread on the neighboring regions, are called "Kursk Magnetic
Anomaly".
The city industry is represented by the leading enterprises of chemical,
pharmaceutical, woodworking, light, food industry, mechanical engineering and
production of building materials. There are about 675 large- and middle-scale
enterprises, which are functioning in the city.
The industrial base is made up by the following plants:
"Belgorod Plant of Mining Mechanical Engineering" OJSC, "Energomash (Belgorod)" CJSC, "Belgorodasbestocement" OJSC, "RCSP-1 Managing Company (reinforced concrete structures plant)" ltd.,
"Rhythm" OJSC Belgorod Plant, "Belgorod Cement" OJSC , "Belgorod Abrasive
Plant" OJSC and others.
Agriculture:
Wheat, barley, oats, corn, millet, buckwheat, sugar-beet, sunflower
are cultivated in the Belgorod Region. Fruit growing (apples, plums, cherry, pears).
Cattle, pigs and sheep breeding, poultry-farming are common.
Culture.
Belgorod is the center of scientific research works on
development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (КМА).
Theatres: Legitimate Drama Theatre n.a. M.S. Shchepkin, Puppet Theatre.
Museums: Museum of Art, Folk Culture, History and Local Lore (the "Kursk Bulge" filial branch - memorial complex in Yakovlevo settlement). "Kursk Battle. Belgorod Direction"
