It is located in the central part of Minusinsk Hollow, on the left bank of Yenisei river,
at the influx of the Abakan river into it, 4218 km. east of Moscow.
Economics
Abakan city is the industrial, cultural and scientific center of the Republic
of Khakassia.
The Industrial Association "Abakanvagonmash", plants: experimental
mechanical plant, steel plant, container plant, experimental mechanical for repair
of timber industry equipment etc.
The enterprises of light industry and on processing of timber and agricultural raw
materials: meat-processing plant, flour mill, confectionery plant, brewery (now
"AYAN" OJSC), creamery, furniture plant, footwear plant, knitting factory, garment factory. Building
materials production.
Abakan is the center of agricultural district.
Culture
Two legitimate drama theatres (Russian theatre n.a. M.Y.Lermontov and
Khakassian theatre n.a. A.M.Topanov),
puppet theatre "Skazka", museum of local lore, TV center, exhibition hall,
tree nursery, zoo,the Khakassian State Book House "Aira". There
are hotels for city visitors such as "Khakassia", "Abakan", "Siberia" etc.
Regional newspapers: "Khakass Chiri" ("Khakassian Land") in Khakassian
language and "Khakassia".
Besides, there are urban newspaper "Abakan" and a number of private periodical
editions.
Gardens, parks and avenues take 1/3 of the city area. The most important are
"Komsomolsky", "Preobrazhensky" and "Orlenok" parks, "Chernogorsky" and
"Pushkinsky" public gardens.
In the center there is a core city, the former Ust-Abakanskoye settlement.
